Planning for Collaborative Project: Location

This is the corridor section is the first we saw. It is moderetly smaller than any other performance space we have used however it has the advantage of the stairs and small part under which we can store props or even use to create sound without the audience seeing us. We can seat the audience in many ways. 1) We can line them up against the wall facing the stairs and they can watch the performance on the stairs and under. We can seat them facing the window (which is the most suitable for us) and they can watch the space without seeing the bottom of the stairs which can allow us to create many off-sight performances and they can also see the stairs. The window can be used by either blocking it with a curtain or we can have sound from the inside and mime from outside and the audience can watch through there. However, as we are starting to create performance material during the class, we have decided that space is far too small for us to utilise and we have collectively decided to not use this space for this performance. We will keep this in mind for other possible performance though.

Our second option is the lobby. This is an incredibly wide space that has lower ceiling towards the wall and a giant dome toward the centre shaped in a circle. This can be used to showcase restriction and then freedom. Through elevation using the stage, the ceiling becomes much lower and we can have composite staging which would make our jobs easier as we are only 3 people. This creates a site specific performance which means we wouldn't need to worry about constantly moving staging or props to suggest different locations We can also use the levels and create an all around performance for the audience. Since Complicité works with projections and we have decided to include those into our performance, we would need to wait for a darker time in the night (or simply block off as many windows as possible) and we would need to wait until most of the school is cleared out so that we don't have any unwanted interruptions during the performance.

Our third and final option is this rustic space outside of the classrooms. It is wide and spacious and the 3 levels can be used to suggest the hierarchy. As we aren't allowed to physically be up on the roof spaces we can place props of body silhouettes or shadows with projections to suggest that a person being there. There are also many windows which can be used to create more performance spaces or interesting exiting and entering opportunities. Once again since Complicité uses projections, we would need to incorporate this in our performance. Since projectors and computers need various plugs this space would cause some issues regarding technology as we would either have to find a plug outside and overload it with wires or get many extension cords and use the ones around the classroom, both these options sound like disaster waiting to happen. A few problems that might take place are that a fire could start or we could end up ruining the entire school's electrical supply, which is a chance I dont think any of us are willing to take...

  1. These photos look great; let's remember to think about all of the performance material we create in class in terms of how it would work in the spaces you might be performing in. Don't forget to use the terminology: 'site specific performance'. Well done.
